Somewhere in the distant past, Carey completed a Graduate Diploma of Social Work from University of Canterbury and prior to that, obtained a Commerce Degree from Lincoln University (currently hanging on his mother's wall for her to appreciate). Outside of work, Carey and his wife are kept busy by their three daughters and are directly involved in Riccarton Community Church.
