OUR CHALLENGE:
12 months to find and connect 500 people who care about the future of Christchurch kids, who will commit $5 a week to make a lasting change

many more Christchurch kids need our support

As a charity working in Hornby, Christchurch, for more than 35 years, we have worked with many families who are struggling to break free of crippling cycles like poverty or violence.

We have seen how difficult it is for children trapped in those cycles to break free and to thrive.

Many support services are set up to help when a whānau is already at crisis point - often too late to prevent lasting harm to children involved.

Others are only funded to offer short term help - so after the funding stops, the child is left once again to manage on their own.

You can make a difference

Through 500@5, you can be part of making a real, lasting change for these children.

We started our Longitudinal Whānau Support (LWS) project because we want to do things differently.

We proactively identify at risk families before they ever reach crisis point, and work to build a long term relationship with them, committing to support them throughout their children’s childhood and teen years. Our goal is to help them build stability and goals for their future, so their home becomes a safe place for their children to grow and thrive.

We also work closely with their local schools, creating Opportunity Hubs providing sports, arts, cultural and academic clubs and opportunities available to all children at the school, and working closely with teachers to offer in-school support to struggling children.

That means we can build trust and layers of support around vulnerable children, building them up and helping them to thrive.

But this long-term work is only possible with long-term support from our community.

Are you someone who cares about Christchurch's future, and building up our most vulnerable kids? If you are, join our 500@5 network, to be part of making a real change in our community.

For less than the price of a coffee, you can change a life.

What we’ve achieved

The LWS project was launched two years ago. Here’s what we’ve achieved in that time…

We are intensively supporting 10 isolated Christchurch families including 25 children

Our first Opportunity Hub at Gilberthorpe School hosts 15 different sports, arts, cultural and academic opportunities

Our LWS team of three staff work with the families and manage the hub, supported by a network of volunteers and local groups

with your support we could do so much more

100 people

Start a Student Scholarship Fund to support individual children’s dreams, and fund a feature movie at our Opportunities Hub

200 people

Fully fund the Gilberthorpe School Opportunity Hub, funding up to 16 different opportunity pathways

300 people

Fund a full time Opportunities Navigator, supporting at risk kids and teens to find their passions and follow them through

500 people

Fully fund the programme at another school, including another Whānau Worker supporting families, and another school-based Opportunity Hub
